SANTIAGO METRO
THE BACKBONE OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION
The Santiago Metro is the backbone of public transportation in the capital and a source of pride for its residents. Its extensive network, composed of seven lines, 143 stations, and covering 149 kilometers, makes it the longest metro system in South America and the second longest in Latin America. Globally, it ranks as the seventh metro system with the best frequency.
Since the inauguration of its first segment (Line 1, San Pablo–La Moneda) in September 1975, the Metro has undergone continuous evolution, reaching record ridership numbers: nearly three million passengers in a single day in 2019 and over 721 million passengers in 2018.
The new Line 7 and the extension of Line 6 are projected to begin operation by 2028. By 2030, full operation of Line 8 and the initial segment of the highly anticipated Line 9, which will connect Bio Bío with La Pintana, are expected. The completion of Line 9, with the remaining segments towards Puente Cal y Canto and Puente Alto, is scheduled for 2032 and 2033 respectively, further strengthening its fundamental role in the capital’s connectivity.
