PORTALES NEIGHBORHOOD UNIT
A MODERNIST LANDMARK
An iconic housing complex of Chilean modern architecture, designed by Bresciani, Valdés, Castillo, and Huidobro, located in Estación Central. Built between 1954 and 1966, it spans 31 hectares with low land occupancy (20%), distributing 1,638 apartments and 302 houses across 19 blocks with 36 different layouts.
Its modern architecture is characterized by the use of reinforced masonry and exposed concrete, with bas-reliefs by Ricardo Yrarrázaval on each building. The original design prioritized extensive green areas (80%), pedestrian promenades, and communal facilities to encourage neighborhood life.
Conceived as a self-sufficient neighborhood unit, Villa Portales was a groundbreaking social housing proposal in Latin America, offering spacious, well-equipped apartments. Despite urban changes, its design remains a key architectural reference and a space with a strong community identity.
