MUSEUM OF MEMORY AND HUMAN RIGHTS
REMEMBERING TO AVOID REPETITION

Inaugurated on January 11, 2010, this museum in the Santiago district is dedicated to commemorating the victims of human rights violations committed during Chile’s military dictatorship. The building, designed by architects Mario Figueroa, Lucas Fehr, and Carlos Dias (Estudio América), is distinguished by its sober and evocative architecture. Its main volume appears to levitate over two reflecting pools, symbolizing the fragility of memory and the pursuit of justice.

The interior design is organized around three concrete walls that structure the entrance, atrium, and exhibition halls. Natural light plays a crucial role, entering through a central skylight and perimeter patios with flowered slopes, visually connecting the interior with the surrounding park. Predominant materials include concrete, steel, and glass, with copper details.

The museum houses a permanent collection and hosts temporary exhibitions aimed at rescuing and disseminating historical memory, while promoting a culture of respect for human rights. It also offers a diverse program of educational and cultural activities, establishing itself as a significant space for reflection on Chile’s recent past.
